Below is a family biography included in The History of McDonald County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Dr. Benjamin F. Smith, Jr., an intelligent and progressive young physician of South West City, Mo., is one of six children born to the marriage of Dr. Benjamin F. Smith, Sr., and Sarah Radcliff [see sketch of Dr. Benjamin F. Smith, Sr]. Our subject was born in Pickaway County, Ohio, on March 17, 1861, and came with his parents to McDonald County, Mo., in 1868. His literary education, which was begun in the common schools of the county, was finished by a two years course in Neosho Collegiate Institute. He afterward entered the Missouri Medical College, of St. Louis, from which institution he graduated on March 3, 1885. He immediately returned to South West City, and began practicing his profession. He has been quite successful, and is building up a good practice. On October 14, 1886, he was united in marriage with Maggie L. Sherman, a daughter of Abner G. Sherman, a resident of McDonald County. One child, Fannie R., has blessed their union. The Doctor is a member of the McDonald County Medical Society, and is a communicant of the Methodist Episcopal Church South.
