Alfred Oyler, an enterprising grocer of South West City, Mo., was born in London, England, on July 22, 1848. He is a son of John Oyler, also a native of England, who immigrated to the United States in 1857, and settled in Tippecanoe County, Ind. It was here that he passed the remainder of his life. Alfred Oyler secured a fair education in the public schools of Indiana, and early learned to do farm work. He remained in Indiana engaged in agricultural pursuits until 1870, when he came to McDonald County, Mo., and settled on a farm in Prairie Township. Two years later he went to the Cherokee Nation and remained until 1885, when he came back to McDonald County, locating at South West City. In 1887 he engaged in his present business, and now carries a full line of groceries, wooden-ware, glass-ware, queens-ware, confectionery and notions, and controls a large trade. On June 13, 1874, he was united in marriage with Mary C. Rhodes, by whom he is the father of five children. They are Minnie J., Mattie, Laura, Maggie and George. Mrs. Oyler is a daughter of M. de LaFayette Rhodes, of McDonald County, and is a consistent member of the Christian Church.
