Below is a family biography included in the book, The History of Lewis County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

Thomas J. Lillard was born in this county, in 1843, the son of Hamilton Lillard, a Virginian, of Irish descent. The mother, Susan, was a daughter of Elias Thompson, also of Virginia. The father was an early settler of this county, where he has been engaged in farming and stock raising. The mother died in 1874, after half a century’s existence, while the father has passed the hale age of seventy years. His second wife was Mrs. Martha (Hill) Washburn. Our subject is the third son of ten children, and received a good education. In March, 1867, he began farming at his place in Clark County; he spent some time in traveling through the South, and March 9, 1871, he married Maria L., a daughter of Robert and Eliza (Price) Morris, natives of Kentucky. He then moved to Lewis County in March, 1872. Their children were Cora B., James E. (deceased), Archie H., Elias W., Brinkley M. (deceased) and Grover C. Our subject was with Col. Porter during the war, but was not in active service. He is a Democrat, while he and his wife are members of the Baptist Church. He has a fine home farm of 200 acres, and 120 elsewhere.
