Below is a family biography included in the book, The History of Lewis County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. J. W. Ramsey was born in 1848 near Bunker Hill, in this county, the sixth son of Silas and Henrietta (Baker) Ramsey, of Kentucky. The father came to this county in 1829, and was one of the oldest pioneers. He was a successful farmer, and died at the age of eighty-one years. Our subject is one of eleven children, and received a fair education. He left home when twenty-seven years of age, and began the grocery business. He followed that for a few years, and then began farming again. He soon after returned to Williamstown, and since 1882 has been a successful merchant with a large business. He was married in December, 1872, to Mary D., a daughter of Samuel and Elisabeth (Pile) Athey, formerly of Kentucky. Their children are Lillian A., Robert M., Lucy L., Fannie P., John P., James R. and Henrietta E. M. Our subject is a Mason, and is a follower of the Democratic party. In religion he, his wife and two children hold to the faith of the Christian Church. The family is of Irish, German and Scotch descent.
