My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography included in the book, The History of Lewis County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

David Newton Glaves, farmer, was born in Pendleton County, Ky., in 1821, the son of Michael and Patsy (Clarkson) Glaves, the former of Irish ancestry, and born in Virginia, and the latter a native of Bourbon County, Ky., born about 1801. The grandfather, Michael, Sr., was a native of Ireland. The father came to Pendleton County, Ky., as a young man, and was married in 1819, and died only four years later. He was in the war of 1812. The mother came to this county in 1857, where she died in 1872. Our subject was reared by his mother, chiefly, and with few educational advantages. When nineteen he began farming independently, and caring for his mother. He was married in 1847, to Nancy, a daughter of Graham and Elizabeth Wallace, and a native of Harrison County, Ky. Their children are James H., Elizabeth, John N., Martha, William M., Robert G., and David J. (a lawyer, and present clerk of the State Senate). Our subject came to this county in 1857, and four years later bought 120 acres of his present farm, which now embraces 860 acres of finely improved land. He also owns forty acres elsewhere. He is a Democrat, and first voted for Polk, and is a prominent member of the Masonic order. He and his family are Baptists.
