Garnett Sullivan was born in Middle Tennessee in 1832, and is a son of Green and Nancy (Sullivan) Sullivan. The father was born in Georgia, and died in Tennessee, leaving Garnett, who was then a small boy, to fight his own way through life. He began working by the day on a farm, but after attaining his majority apprenticed himself to a tanner; not liking the trade, however, he left Tennessee and located in Missouri, Lawrence County, in 1852, where he engaged in farming. In 1853 he was married to Sarah Jane Sullivan, by whom he became the father of two children, one living, Joseph J. In 1863 Mr. Sullivan enlisted in the Union army, in Company H, Seventy-sixth Missouri Militia, and served until the close of the war, making raids through Arkansas and Southern Missouri. He owns 110 acres of very fine land, eighty acres of which are in a good state of cultivation and well improved. He and wife are members of the Missionary Baptist Church.
