Dr. John Q. Titterington, physician, farmer and stock dealer, of Laclede County, Mo., is a native of Cumberland County, Ky., where he was born February 12, 1826. His parents, Adam and Sarah (Smith) Titterington, were originally from Belfast, Ireland, and Virginia, respectively. The father, who was born in 1783, was educated in his native city, and when eighteen years of age came to the United States, and located in Kentucky, where he was married to Miss Smith, who had moved there with her parents at an early day. He was engaged in farming and school-teaching for a number of years, and was a graduate in medicine, but never practiced that profession. On coming to America he took an active interest in politics, and was a Jacksonian Democrat. He was a member of the Christian Church, and died August 17, 1856, at the age of seventy-six years, his wife dying in 1837. She was born in 1794. Their union was blessed in the birth of twelve children, all of whom grew to maturity, and five are now living: James (the eldest of the family, was a graduate of the Louisville (Ky.) Medical College, and was one of the oldest practitioners of Laclede County, but is now a resident of Pulaski County), John Q., Daniel (a house carpenter, of Dallas, Tex.), Alfred W. (a practicing physician, of Richland, Mo.) and Elizabeth (widow of Mr. Merrit). The father was married twice, and by his second wife became the father of two children: Caroline (Mrs. Hamilton, of Clarksville, Tenn.), and a son, who is deceased. Their mother died in 1864. Dr. John Q. Titterington grew to maturity in Christian and Caldwell Counties, Ky., and received his education at Princeton, Ky., and in 1850 began the study of medicine under Dr. Young, two years later entering the St. Louis Medical College, and the following year began practicing his profession in Laclede County, Mo., and the next year located in Marionville, Lawrence County. After residing in this place for seven years he entered the Confederate army as second surgeon, and served four years, after which he located in Greene County, Ill. Here he resided only ten months, when he again settled in Missouri, taking up his residence in Franklin County, and in 1869 came to Laclede County, where he has since made his home. He has a very extensive practice, and is one of the acknowledged leaders of the medical profession in Laclede County. June 1, 1854, he was married to Elizabeth Wilks, who was born in Alabama March 9, 1836. She came to Missouri with her parents when a child, and located in Lawrence County, on Buck Prairie, where descendants of the family are still living. Two of their five children are living: Jesse M. (who is a graduate of the Nashville Medical College, and is now one of the leading physicians of Marionville, Mo.), and Mary (Mrs. Smith, of St. Louis). Those deceased are James H. (who died in infancy), Sarah A. (whose death occurred at the age of about two years) and Robert D. (who died when twenty-two years of age). He was a graduate of the Christian Biblical College, of St Louis, and the St. Louis Medical College before he was twenty-one years of age; was one of the most promising young men of the county, and gave promise of becoming one of the leading physicians of the State. He had built up a good practice, and was respected and esteemed by all who knew him. He died on the 27th of October, 1888.
