Below is a family biography included in The History of Laclede County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1889.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

John B. Hickman, house painter, dealer in wall-paper, prints, etc., was born in Jefferson County, Ohio, September 2, 1843, and is the son of Joseph and Mary A. (Swords) Hickman. The parents were residents of Jefferson County, Ohio, until the death of the father, which occurred in 1849, of cholera. The mother is yet living, and resides in Ohio. Of their six children, four are now living: Sarah A., Margaret A., William and John B. The latter was reared in Steubenville, Ohio, was educated there, and there learned his trade. In August, 1861, he enlisted in Company G, Thirtieth Ohio Infantry, and served until March, 1862, when he was discharged on account of being taken prisoner by bushwhackers. He re-enlisted in May, 1862, in Company F, Eighty-fourth Ohio Infantry, and was discharged in September, 1862, he only enlisting in the three months service. In June, 1863, he enlisted again in Company H, Eleventh Ohio Cavalry, in the Rocky Mountain service, and was sergeant in both the last enlistments. He was promoted to the rank of first lieutenant, but was cheated out of this position. He was mustered out in July, 1866, and returned home, where he remained until 1868, when he came to Lebanon. He here engaged in his present business, which he has carried on quite successfully ever since. He is a Mason, a member of the A. O. U. W., the G. A. R. and the K. of L., having served as an officer in all the organizations. He was married in 1868 to Miss Jane Hyde, of Ohio, and four children were the result of this union: Joseph W., Hugh E., Georgia and Kinsey R.
