James Detherage was born in Warren County, of the “Blue Grass” State, in 1832, and is a son of James and Sallie (Andrews) Detherage, who were born in Tennessee and North Carolina, respectively, and were farmers by occupation. James is one of ten children, and was reared to manhood on his father’s farm. In 1854 he was married to Miss Susanna Wood, of Kentucky, by whom he had nine children: Martin, who married Mary Rocter; Winnie, wife of William Rippey; Thomas; Betsey, wife of Henry Wood; Sarah, Mary J., James, Marian and Jesse. Both Mr. and Mrs. Detherage are members of the Baptist Church, in which he is a deacon, and politically he is a Democrat. His first purchase of land was eighty acres in Warren County, Ky., which he afterward sold, and purchased the farm of 160 acres where he is now residing. Besides this land he owns forty acres more, and is one of the best and most thrifty farmers of his locality. He raises good stock of all kinds, and throughout life has been an earnest supporter of the cause of education.
