Below is a family biography included in The History of Laclede County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1889.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

Absalom Gutherie, fruit grower and farmer, and son of John and Sarah (Jinkins) Gutherie, was born in East Tennessee in 1833. The parents were born in Virginia and Tennessee, respectively. The father came to Tennessee about 1800, locating in Claiborne County, and there engaged in farming. He and family came to Dallas County in 1848, and here he continued farming, which occupation he followed in that county until his death in 1854. His wife died in 1852. They had a family of thirteen children, three now living: Absalom, Isaiah and Louisa. The mother was a member of the Baptist Church. Absalom Gutherie came to Missouri when fifteen years of age, and in this State finished his growth. He was educated in the common district schools, and received a very fair knowledge of books. In 1856 he located in Dallas County, and came to his present location in 1869. During the late unpleasantness between the North and South, he served in the Eighth Missouri Volunteer Cavalry, United States Army, for three years, and was one year in the Home Guards. He was in the battles of Prairie Grove, Little Rock and others. He was married to Miss Nancy Davis, daughter of Nathan L. Davis, who was one of the old settlers of this county. This union resulted in the birth of five children: Wesley; Elizabeth, wife of Jesse Pruett; William; Louisa, wife of Bringle Bringleson; and Elias, at home. Mr. and Mrs. Gutherie are members of the Baptist Church, and he is a member of the G. A. R., Post No. 48, of Lebanon. He is a Republican in politics, and has been school director for the past fifteen years.
