Below is a family biography included in The History of Jasper County, Missouri published by Mills & Company in 1883.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. WILLIAM McMILLAN, president of the Carthage Foundry, was born in 1832, in the month of December, in Washington county, Pennsylvania. His father, John, was a native of Pennsylvania, and his mother, whose maiden name was Mary Johnson, was also a native of Pennsylvania, both of whom are now deceased. Mr. McMillan was reared and educated in Pennsylvania, and brought up on a farm, which was at the time of his boyhood in the hands of the third generation. He continued farming on the old estate till 1872, when he sold out and came to Carthage, Missouri. He remained out of business until 1874, when he bought a third interest in the Carthage Foundry, which is one of the leading enterprises of Carthage. They employ as a rule about twenty-five men. They ship some very heavy work for mining purposes to Leadville, Colorado. Mr. McMillan and his wife are members of the Presbyterian Church, in good and regular standing, and is a prominent worker both in the church and society in general. He was married in 1864 to Miss Mary Moore, of Pennsylvania. They have four children living. Mr. McMillan is a highly respected Christian gentleman.
