Below is a family biography included in The History of Jasper County, Missouri published by Mills & Company in 1883.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. WILLIAM J. SAILOR came to the county March 21, 1871, from Waverly, Pike county, Ohio, where he was born, raised, and educated. He was born Nov. 19, 1847, being a son of Elzy and Jemima (Pickingpugh) Sailor. The father was a native of Morgan county, Ohio, born in 1822, where he was raised and married; the mother was a native of Virginia, born in 1823, and when she was ten years of age settled with her parents in Morgan county, Ohio. In 1845 our subject’s parents moved to Blackford county, Ind., but in the course of a few months settled in Pike county, Ohio. The father was ordained as a Methodist Episcopal minister in 1840, and since then has devoted all his time to the interests of the church. Their family consists of eight children, seven boys and one daughter, as follows: Francis M., Samuel, George, Wm., S., Lafayette, Joseph, Louisa, and Martin. Our subject received a fine high school education at Waverly, Ohio, and began life as a school-teacher. Finally he came west to visit a brother (Francis M.), who had settled in Jasper county, Mo., in 1868. William J. began teaching school Sept. 9, 1871. He was married to Emma R. Swank, a native of Macoupin county, Ill., born March 18, 1856, a daughter of Jesse and H. E. (Wagaman) Swank. Mr. and Mrs. Sailor lived in Texas some time, and in 1875 he went to California, traveling all over that state; afterward went to Washington Territory. He returned to Missouri in the spring of 1876, and since has devoted his time to teaching school. Mr. and Mrs. Sailor have but one child living, Joseph W., born Aug 23, 1872, and have lost four children.
