Below is a family biography included in The History of Jasper County, Missouri published by Mills & Company in 1883.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. WILLIAM H. SMITH, druggist. Mr. Smith was born in 1812, in Champaign county, Ohio. His father, John J. Smith, was a native of Maryland. He died August 26, 1882, at the advanced age of one hundred years, and his mother, Hettie, nee Baird, was a native of Pennsylvania. John J. Smith is the father of nine children, all of whom are still living. William H. Smith was reared in Ohio. He was editor of a newspaper in Kentucky called the Kentucky Whig, and during the campaign in 1836 advocated the election of Harrison. He afterward removed to Indiana where he farmed and taught school many years. In 1852 he came west to LaSalle county, Illinois, where he engaged in farming and stock-raising until 1872, when he came to Carthage, Missouri. Here he invested in real estate, and bought the drug store where Crothers & Deal are now located, continuing in business here about five years. He sold to Crothers & Deal. In November, 1881, he opened a drug store on the east side of the square where he is now located. Mr. Smith has served as a member of the school-board for nine and a half years. He has also been a member of the city council. He and his family are members of the Congregational Church, of which he is collector and deacon. His first wife, Esther, nee Gregory, died in about three years after their marriage, leaving one son, Wilesther, who is still living. His second wife, Elizabeth, nee Holeman, is still living. They have four children, two sons and two daughters. Mr. Smith is an old and highly respected citizen.
