Below is a family biography included in The History of Jasper County, Missouri published by Mills & Company in 1883.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. SAMUEL RHODES was born in east Tennessee, near Knoxville, June 20, 1832. At the age of five years, his father moved to Palmyra, Mo. His father fought under General Jackson at the battle of New Orleans. Mr. Rhodes has been three times married. The first time he was united with Anna Mathews, in Scotland county, Missouri, Dec. 25, 1875, who died in Oregon; was again married Jan. 10, 1868, to Manda Calahan, in Jackson county, Ill. The children are Martha J., Antha N., and George W. She died in Cowley county, Kan., Jan. 13, 1870. Married the third time to Mrs. Mary Portwood, Sept. 5, 1876, in Jasper county, Mo.; came to Jasper county in August, 1875, and has been living at Smithfield. He has a small farm nearby, of twenty acres; twelve acres in wheat averaged thirty-one and a half bushel, and five acres of corn averaged forty bushels. There is also a good orchard on the place. Mr. Rhodes is by trade a blacksmith, which he has worked at for twenty-five years. Mrs. Rhodes is a member of the Baptist Church. He is at present interested in mining near the camp south of Carl Junction with good prospect of success.
