Below is a family biography included in The History of Jasper County, Missouri published by Mills & Company in 1883.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. DAN COLLINS, liveryman, Joplin, Mo., was born in the county or Cork, Ireland, August 10, 1844. His parents, Michael and Anna (O’Connell) Collins, were also natives of the Emerald Isle. During infancy, subject was taken to Cornwall, England, where his father engaged in mining. There our subject grew to manhood and was educated in the English schools. He came to America in 1862, sailing from Liverpool in the spring of that year on the Moravian, and arriving at Quebec after a voyage of fourteen days. Came almost immediately to the states and engaged in mining at Ogdensburgh, N. Y. Continued there one and a half years and then engaged to go on an exploring expedition for A. L. Hunt, and discovered and opened up the Brites mines. He remained there three years and then returned to New York and engaged in mining at the former place for several years, then to Mackinaw City, Pa,, and engaged in the same business five years. From the last named place he went to Friedensville, same state, and was similarly employed. He came west to Illinois, and in 1871 to Missouri, locating in this city and engaged in mining and freighting for several years. He established his present business in 1874 and has since continued. Mr. Collins was married in New York City, in June, 1868. Mrs. Collins was born in Dublin, Ireland. She is a member of the Catholic Church. Mr. Collins is an excellent judge of stock, and besides conducting a first-class business in the livery line, engages in the buying and selling of horses and mules.
