Clark C. Brown, proprietor of The Tribune of Union, Franklin Co., Mo., was born in Kankakee County, Ill., September 19, 1858, and is the son of Samuel and Jane (Calkins) Brown. The father was born in Tonipkins Co., N. Y., September 20, 1813, and was the son of Ichabod Brown, also a native of New York State. Samuel came west at the age of twenty-five, and located in Michigan, but later removed to Ohio. From there he removed to Illinois, and in 1869 removed to Missouri, located in Franklin County, and here followed agricultural pursuits until his death, which occurred in 1878. The mother was born in Onondaga County, N. Y., May 3, 1832, and is the daughter of Cornelius C. Calkins. She is still living and is a resident of Boone Township, Franklin Co., Mo. The subject of this sketch remained with his parents in Kankakee County, Ill., until his eleventh year and then came to Franklin County, Mo. He secured a limited education in the common schools, and at the age of eighteen began teaching, having by his own exertions fitted himself for that calling. Having followed the profession of a school teacher for eleven years, he established The Tribune, a newspaper of Union, of which he at once took active management, and is engaged at that business at the present. The Tribune is being conducted as a candid, earnest Republican paper, and occupies a worthy position among other journals of the county.
