Robert Jackson Bowman, a successful tiller of the soil in Spring Creek Township, whose residence is situated four miles east of Salem, was born October 18, 1831, in Washington County, Tenn., and is the son of Isaac and Agnes (Young) Bowman, both natives of Washington County, Tenn. Isaac Bowman was born in 1812, and was a farmer by occupation. About 1844 he moved to Barren County, Ky., where he now resides. He was a soldier in the Confederate army during the late war; was captured at Vicksburg, Miss., and retained some time. His wife died in 1887. They were the parents of twelve children, Robert J. being the ninth. He was about thirteen years of age when his parents moved to Kentucky, and was reared on a farm, where he remained until over twenty years of age. In 1854 he married Miss Nancy Jane Peden, daughter of Benjamin and Mary Peden, and a native of Kentucky, born in 1832. Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Bowman: James L., farmer; Benjamin, merchant; Joseph, Matthew, John, William, Juda, wife of Jube Carthy, and Mary, wife of Eli Mosher. In 1870 Mr. Bowman left Kentucky, and immigrated to Dent County, Mo., where he bought 300 acres of land four miles east of the county seat, where he located and where he has since resided. He is a Democrat in politics, and his wife is a member of the Missionary Baptist Church.
