Andrew Nieghorn is of German descent, and was born in Cole County, Mo., in 1853, being the second of five children born to John and Annie (Schubert) Nieghorn, who came from their native land of Germany to the United States when quite young. The father operated one of the first horse-mills in Cole County, and also conducted a distillery. During this time (about 1849) he married, and shortly after purchased a large farm of 700 acres, 150 acres of which he cleared and improved, erecting good buildings and setting out a good orchard. He is still living, and although the snows of seventy-three winters have passed over his head, he is yet hale and hearty. He visited the “Fatherland” in 1866. His wife died April 5, 1888. During his boyhood days Andrew Nieghorn was thoroughly grounded in the “three R’s” in the common schools, and was engaged in assisting his father until twenty-five years of age, when he united his fortunes with Miss Lizzie Hiesinger, a native of Cole County, and a daughter of Andrew and Maggie Hiesinger, who are also Germans, and came to Cole County a number of years ago. In 1888 Mr. Nieghorn purchased 320 acres of good land, 200 acres of which is creek bottom soil. It is an excellent grain farm, and yields more than the average of corn, wheat and oats. He keeps a good grade of Short-Horn and Durham cattle, and also raises horses, hogs and sheep. He has an old orchard of 200 trees on his farm, and has lately set out a fine young orchard of choice varieties of fruit, and expects soon to erect a new dwelling-house. His family consists of three children: Henry, Otto and Erne, and he and wife are members of the Lutheran Church.
