Below is a family biography included in the book, The History of Clark County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

Charles B. Matlock, of the law firm of Matlock & Hiller, was born in Illinois February 27, 1846. He was reared principally on the farm, and began the study of law when quite young, under John H. Craig and H. Scott Hull, of Keokuk, Iowa, and was admitted to the bar by Judge David Waggoner, of the supreme court, in 1866. Since that time he has been engaged in the practice of his profession in Clark County. Mo. In February, 1872, he married Miss Cora Campbell, of Clark County, and a daughter of Isaac R and Emily (Davis) Campbell. She was born in Missouri in 1850, and is a member of the Presbyterian Church. Our subject’s parents, Thomas and Nancy (Ballard) Matlock, were natives of Tennessee and North Carolina, respectively. The father was a minister in the Disciple or Christian Church. They reared a family of eleven children, eight of whom lived to be grown. The father died in 1865, and the mother followed him to the grave in 1875. From 1867 to 1872 our subject was prosecuting attorney in Clark County. He is a Republican in politics, and an excellent citizen.
