Below is a family biography included in The History of Barton County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1889.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

Jonathan Wesley Hendricks, collector of Ozark Township, is a native of Adams County, Ill., born in 1848, being a son of John and Elizabeth (Gilkey) Hendricks, who were born in Missouri and Kentucky, respectively, were married in Illinois, and in 1866 removed to Crawford County, Kan., and in 1877 to Barton County, Mo., where the mother died in March, 1887. Both parents were members of the Church of God, and he is still living and engaged in farming. His father, William Hendricks, was of German descent, and was one of the early settlers of Southeast Missouri but died in Illinois. Franklin Gilkey, the grandfather was a Kentuckian, and also died in Illinois. Jonathan W. Hendricks, our subject, is the eldest of four children, and received a common school education in the State of Illinois. He removed with his parents to Kansas, and was married there in 1875 to Sarah E. Elliott, a daughter of Isaac and Eliza Elliott, who were Kentuckians and died in Kansas in 1886 and Indiana in 1865, respectively. Mrs. Hendricks was born in Indiana, and she and Mr. Hendricks are the parents of two daughters. In 1877 the family came to Barton County, Mo., and the next year located on their present farm, which consists of eighty acres. Mr. Hendricks is a Republican politically, and cast his first presidential vote for Grant, in 1872. In 1889 he was elected township collector for two years, and is at the present time a member of the Farmers’ Alliance. He and wife are consistent members of the Church of God. His sisters are Mrs. Mary Boulware, Mrs. Nancy Frame and Mrs. Alice Venable, of Pike County, Mo.
