Below is a family biography included in The History of Barry County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. John Goodnight (deceased) was born in Giles County, Tenn., on September 13, 1815, and was reared in his native State and Illinois. He resided in the latter State until about 1837, when he came to Missouri, locating in Greene County, where he was married on October 6, 1842, to Mary A. Stockton, who was born in Overton County, Tenn., June 9, 1827. After their marriage they settled in Greene County and remained until 1856, when they removed to the farm in Barry County, on which Mrs. Goodnight still resides. Here Mr. Goodnight passed the remainder of his life, passing away on September 20, 1880. He was a farmer, and a highly respected citizen of the county. In politics he was a Republican, and served as public administrator from 1876 until his death. To Mr. and Mrs. Goodnight were born ten children, named as follows: George M., Francis M., Sarah J. (wife of Rev. John A. Sartin), John J. (deceased), William H., Mary E., Samantha A. (wife of L. C. Robbins) Dicey I. (deceased), Eliza E. (wife of Henry Garey) and Pleasant S. All the family except the youngest are members of the Protestant Methodist Church.
