Below is a family biography included in The History of Barry County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

Green B. Gregory came to Barry County, Mo., in 1854, from Washington County. He located about one mile from Exeter, his house being the second one built in this vicinity. Since then he has not resided farther than two miles from Exeter, his present residence, a large, two-story frame house, being very near the town. He was born in Tennessee in 1825, and when quite small went to Illinois, where he was reared and remained until 1841, with the exception of three years spent in Indiana. In 1841 he removed to Washington County, Mo., and engaged in mining. For eighteen months he served in the Mexican War as a, member of Company D, Third Missouri Regiment of Volunteers, after which he returned to Washington County. In 1852 he went to California, where for one year he was engaged in mining. Returning to Washington County he remained there until 1854, when he removed to Barry County, since which time he has been very successfully engaged in farming. For the last eight years he has also handled produce extensively. In 1853 he wedded Elvira Cornwell, by whom he had seven children, of whom three, Joseph G., Mary J. and John M., are living. Mrs. Gregory died in 1871, and in 1873 Mr. Gregory married again, choosing for his wife Martha J. Weatherly, of Barry County. She was born and reared in Tennessee. Seven children have also been born to this union, five of whom are living, viz.: Michael E., Josiah W., Frances E., James F. and George A. Mr. Gregory, his wife and one daughter are members of the Christian Church. One son is a member of the Methodist Church. Our subject is a Democrat in politics, and is a member of the I. O. O. F., and one of the oldest Masons in the county. He is a public-spirited and highly respected citizen.
