Below is a family biography included in The History of Barry County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Elias Evans, a well-to-do farmer and fruit grower of Barry County, Mo., was born in Culpeper County, Va., in 1807, and is the fourth of twelve children born to Thomas and Catherine (Prill) Evans. Thomas Evans was also a Virginian, born in 1787. He was reared and married in his native State after which he removed to Ohio. Seven years later he came to Indiana, settling in Wayne County, where he died in 1824. His wife also died there. Thomas Evans was a farmer and millwright. Of their children there were nine boys and three girls, only four of whom are living. Elias Evans was reared in Virginia, Ohio and Indiana. He was married in the latter State, in 1832 to Nancy Carey, who was born in Ohio in 1813. They have seven children who are living: viz.: Emaline (widow of John Ovelman), Ada, Burrel L., Josephine, Ange, Georgia A. and Richard. In 1842 Mr. Evans removed to Holt County, Mo., and remained until 1863, when he came to Barry County, locating on his present farm, he engaged in the nursery business which he continued for ten years. It proved a financial success, and the good of the enterprise to the community is seen in the fine orchards on so many farms in Southwest Missouri he being the originator of the business in this section. Politically, Mr. Evans is a Democrat and has served as probate judge of Barry County. The family are highly esteemed, and are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.
