Below is a family biography included in The History of Barry County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

B. L. Evans was born in Henry County, Ind., on September 1, 1837, and is a son of Elias and Nancy A. (Carey) Evans, natives of Virginia and Ohio, respectively. Elias Evans is of Welsh descent, and was born on September 22, 1807. He now resides in Shoal Creek Township, Barry County, engaged in farming and fruit growing. His wife, who is still living, is four years his junior. B. L. Evans was reared on a farm in Holt County, Mo., and was married there, after which he engaged in farming for a short time for himself. He then went to Omaha, Neb., where he clerked in a dry goods store for two years, when he removed to Council Bluffs, at which place he worked at the carpenter’s trade for about three years. Thence he moved to Pacific City, Iowa, where he was successfully engaged in the cattle business for about three years, after which, with his parents, he came to Barry County. He was engaged in the fruit and nursery business until coming to Pioneer, in October, 1887, at which time he and his son, Perry L., purchased of D. T. Wainright their present general merchandise store. This store was established by L. E. Prickett, and was the second business enterprise established in Pioneer, T. B. Barker having established the first. B. L. Evans & Son are doing a good business, with a capital stock of $3,000. On July 5, 1860, Mr. Evans was united in marriage with Maggie J. Lloyd, a native of Jonesboro, West Va., and born in 1844. Three children have been born to their union: Perry L., Emma May and Jesse Lee. Mr. and Mrs. Evans are zealous members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. Mr. Evans takes an active interest in political affairs, and is a Democrat. He filled the office of probate judge in Barry County for one term in a manner most satisfactory to his constituents.
