R. D. BELLAMY was born in Lexington, Fayette Co., Ky., on December 14, 1818, and is a son of John and Sarah (Johnson) Bellamy. The father was a native of Dinwiddie County, Va., and came to the State in 1810. In 1812 he was drafted into the war, but procuring a substitute he was excused. While a resident of that county he turned his attention to the carpenter’s trade. In 1819 he came to Todd County and turned his attention to farming. Soon after his arrival here he built a distillery near Daysville. This he ran for some time; he afterward put up a distillery on Elk Fork, in this district, and purchased the mill which had been erected by Mr. Stephen Ray. Both of these industries he managed for many years, and at one time he was one of the wealthiest men of the county. He was a Magistrate in his district for a number of years, and at the time of the adoption of the new Constitution he was next to the senior Magistrate of the county. He was a member of the Christian Church, and of the Masonic fraternity. His death occurred in April, 1860; that of the mother in 1831. Our subject is the fifth of ten children, of whom four are now living: John, in Girard, Macoupin Co., Ill.; Eliza, wife of J. H. Terry; Margaret, wife of Hiram Wallace, and Robert D. The old field schools of the county furnished the latter his education; he remained at home until fifteen, and then went to Port Royal, Tenn., where he learned the carpenter’s trade. He remained there eight years, and then came to Old Allensville. He only remained here one year, and then went to Keysburg, Logan County. Here he followed his trade for twelve years. In 1866 he came to Allensville and opened a furniture store and cabinet shop, and is still engaged in the business; he now carries a stock of about $1,000. Mr. Bellamy was married the first time in Port Royal, Tenn., in 1839, to Miss Sarah A. Northington, a daughter of John and Mary (Norflett) Northington, natives of the Carolinas. This lady was born in Port Royal, and was the mother of four children, three of whom are living, viz.: John T., in Montgomery County; Mary, wife of William N. Gaines, of Robertson County, Tenn., and Minerva, wife of Archer Bobbitt, of Port Royal. Mrs. Bellamy died in 1852, and in 1855 Mr. Bellamy was married in Keysburg, Logan County, to Mrs. Susan Wood (nee Howard), a daughter of David and Susan (Halsell) Howard, natives of Jessamine County. This lady was born in Logan County, and is the mother of one child, now deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Bellamy are members of the Baptist Church. He is a member of Keysburg Lodge, I. O. O. F., and was one of the charter members of the Old Allensville Lodge. He is now serving as Trustee of the village.
