Below is a family biography included in County of Todd, Kentucky, Historical and Biographical edited by William Henry Perrin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Co. in 1884.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. N. B. RILEY was born in Logan County, Ky., September 14, 1841, and is a son of John and Mary (Murphy) Riley. The parents were natives of South Carolina, and came to Cumberland County in an early day. In 1841 they moved to Logan County; there the father died in 1882, the mother in 1857. Our subject was the youngest of eight children; his education was received in the common schools of the county; he remained at home until twenty-six, and then, commencing life for himself, settled down on the home farm. In 1872 he came to Todd County and settled on his present farm, where he now owns about 600 acres, of which there are about 500 acres in cultivation. He is also paying some attention to stock-raising. In March, 1888, he became a partner with Mr. C. E. Haddox in Allensville. The firm now carry a stock of about $8,000 worth of groceries, hardware and agricultural implements. They are also commission merchants, handling about 50,000 bushels of grain per year. Mr. Riley was married in 1867 to Miss Isabella Page, a daughter of Wilson Page, of Logan County. This union has resulted in one daughter and four sons. September 6, 1861, subject enlisted in the Eighth Kentucky Regiment, C. S. A. He went out as Lieutenant, and in September, 1862, was promoted to the rank of Captain. He was captured at the battle of Fort Donelson, sent to Johnson’s Island, and was detained there six months. He was then exchanged, and re-entered the service. He was honorably discharged in April, 1864. He was elected Magistrate in 1882, and is still holding that office. He is a member of the Christian Church.
