BENJAMIN B. BUTLER, Sheriff of Todd County, Ky., was born in this county August 8, 1850. His parents were H. D. and Permelia C. (Carey) Butler, both natives of Kentucky. The father was born in Todd County; was a farmer, well and favorably known in his county. His death occurred May 3, 1884, at the age of sixty-six years. He had been a member of the Baptist Church for many years. The mother still lives in this county at the age of sixty-two years. She is also a member of the Baptist Church. Sheriff Butler began his business career at the age of sixteen. He followed farming until about the age of twenty-five. He then opened a general store at Kirkmansville, which he carried on with good success. Next he bought the business of M. W. Grissam, his only competitor. In the same year he bought the flouring-mill in the place and conducted the business of both until 1881, when he sold his store and has since conducted the business of the mill. Mr. Butler was elected Constable and discharged the duties of his office with credit to himself and satisfaction to his constituents. He was elected Sheriff in 1882, and will be a candidate for re-election the coming fall. It is generally conceded that he has made an efficient public officer. He owns a farm of 130 acres which he has acquired by his own unaided industry. Mr. Butler was married March 12, 1884, to Miss Nannie E. Heltsley, daughter of J. H. Heltsley, of Muhlenburg County. Mrs. Butler is a member of the Baptist Church.
