Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887. These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. JAMES W. SIMPSON, physician, was born in Grant County, Ky., October 11, 1852, and is the eldest of ten children born to Morgan J. and Letitia (Gaugh) Simpson. Morgan J. Simpson was born in Grant County about 1829, is a farmer by occupation, and is now living in Grant County, a widower, his wife having died in 1887. Louis M. Simpson, paternal grandfather of our subject, was a native of Pendleton County, Ky., and was a trader and farmer; he was also a colonel in the State militia, and died in 1843. Francis Gaugh, the maternal grandfather of James W. Simpson, was a native of Grant County, Ky., a general farmer and trader, and died in 1857. James W. Simpson was reared and educated in his native county. He studied medicine under Dr. James Williams, at Dry Ridge, Grant County, and attended lectures at the Kentucky School of Medicine, in Louisville. He afterward took a course in the Hospital College of Medicine at Louisville, and then returned to the Kentucky School of Medicine, where he graduated in 1881. He located at Corinth, Ky., engaged in the practice of medicine, and in 1882 went to New Columbus, Owen County, where he now resides. Mr. Simpson has been twice married, first in 1879, to Miss Amanda Tulley, daughter of Dr. Tulley, of Williamstown, Ky., and after her death he married, in 1883, Miss Belle Jackson, of Owen County. He has three children: Letitia, Octerlony and Roscoe M. Politically Mr. Simpson is a Democrat, and he, with his family, is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
