My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

WILLIAM P. NICHOLS was born in Caldwell County, Ky., on the 6th day of March, 1829. He is a son of Jesse and Elizabeth Nichols, and was reared on his father’s farm, in his native county, where he had only the advantages of a common school education. At the age of twenty-one, he came to McCracken County, and engaged in the pursuits of agriculture, which he followed until 1878. He was elected to the office of county surveyor, in 1868, filling this office acceptably for ten years, and until elected to the clerkship of McCracken County, in 1878, to which office he was re-elected in 1882. Mr. Nichols is a kind, attentive officer of the county, a gentleman of refined sensibilities, and enjoys the confidence of a large circle of acquaintances. He has been twice married first in 1854, to Miss Sarah Rice, who died in 1870, and second to Mrs. Sallie Hall, widow of James M. Hall and daughter of J. Davis, of Livingston County, Ky. She died in October, 1881. There are two children result of the former marriage: Mary C., wife of Felix G. Rudolph, and William B. Nichols.
