Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

WEST H. BRIAN, member of the mercantile firm of Hecht, Ezell & Brian, Paducah, Ky., is a son of Dr. James H, and Caroline (Prewitt) Brian, and was born in 1842, in Monroe County, Ky. In 1843 his father moved to Marshall County, Ky.; there he devoted himself to the practice of medicine, with which he combined farming. He died in January, 1863; his widow still survives him and is a resident of Paducah, making her home with subject, she was born in Monroe County, Ky. In 1861, West H. Brian entered the Confederate Army as a member of Company A (Capt. Alfred Johnston), Third Kentucky Regiment. He participated in several hard fought battles, including Shiloh, Corinth, Vicksburg, etc.; was made a prisoner in west Tennessee, and retained under parole, until the close of the war. In 1866, he located in Paducah, where, until 1874, he was employed as a salesman. In the year just named, he became a member of the firm indicated above, which is now one of the most prosperous firms in Paducah. They are located at No. 106 Broadway, and keep a stock of a general character. Mr. Brian is a member of the Christian Church, I. O. O. F., encampment, K. of H., and for eight years a member of the board of trustees of the city schools, and secretary of the board for the past five years. He was married in Marshall County, Ky., in 1869, to Miss Mary Locker, daughter of John P. Locker. Bertie Brian is their only child.
