My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

SAMUEL G. HINES, McCracken County, is a native of Logan County, this State, was born December 8, 1838, and is a son of John Hines, who was originally from Virginia, but came to Kentucky with his parents when a young man, locating in Logan County, where he resided most of his life on a farm. A few years preceding his death, he went to live with his son in Ballard County, this State, and there departed this life at the age of eighty-two years. His wife, formerly a Miss Ann Duncan, died a short time before her husband. They had eleven children. Our subject’s early life was devoted to farming, and improving the meager school facilities of the day to secure an education. At twenty-one years of age he started in business for himself, in a small place in Logan County, but after a year and one-half returned to farming, his father having given him some farm property in the meantime. Here he labored until 1870, at which date he disposed of the farm and bought similar property in Ballard County, where he remained twelve years, when he came to his present farm of 114 acres in McCracken County, retaining the Ballard farm of 135 acres. Mr. Hines is a member of the Christian Church, is a man of public spirit and enterprise and supports the temperance cause. He has been twice married, his first wife having formerly been a Miss Frances Miller, of Logan County. The union was blessed with three children, one of whom, Joseph, is now living. His second wife was Miss Alice Bacon, of McCracken County. They have three children: Cordelia, George and Samuel G.
