My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

JOHN W. SAUNER was born in Nashville, Tenn., March 31, 1823, and came to Paducah, Ky., with his parents, John and Eliza Sauner, in 1836, and is consequently among the very few men who have been in Paducah thus long. John Sauner was a carpenter by trade, and as a result, John W. adopted the same pursuit, which he followed several years of his early life, and until 1854, since which date he has been constantly in county or city offices. His official record includes a service of seven years as deputy sheriff, of McCracken County; three years as sheriff, four years as city marshal of Paducah, eight years as mayor of Paducah, and in 1882 was elected to the office of jailer of the county. It is but just to say that in all this long public career, covering a period of over thirty years, Mr. Sauner has always proven himself a faithful and efficient officer. He was married in McCracken County, April 20, 1843, to Miss Phoebe E. Forrest, and has one daughter, Nellie G. (wife of John T. Zelner, of Paducah). Mr. Sauner is a member of the I. O. O. F., and K. of H.
