My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

JOHN J. GUTHRIE, son of William P. and Eliza J. Guthrie, of Calloway County, Ky., was born in Virginia, but came with the family to Kentucky, when three years old. He grew to manhood on the farm, was educated primarily in the common schools of Calloway County, and later at Murray, and at Paris, Tenn. When twenty-one years old he began business as a dry goods merchant in Murray, where he remained until he moved to Paducah, in 1864. In 1865, he established a dry goods house in the latter place, and is now one of its most popular and well-known merchants. His present business locality is No. 214 Broadway. Mr. Guthrie was married in Paducah, in 1867, to Miss Mary J. Ratcliffe, daughter of Judge R. S. Ratcliffe, formerly president of the City National Bank of Paducah, which he organized and of which he was president up to the time of his death. They have one child: Mamie K. Guthrie. Mr. and Mrs. Guthrie are members of the First Baptist Church of Paducah.
