My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

JAMES H. MILES was born in Montgomery County, Tenn., January 8, 1836. His father, Samuel A. Miles, is yet living in this county at the advanced age of eighty-four years. He is a Virginian by birth, but was removed to Tennessee in his youth, locating in Montgomery County. He has always been a farmer. He removed to Christian County, this State, and about 1850, to this county, locating on the place upon which he now resides. His wife, formerly Rebecca Cathran, is a native of Tennessee. Our subject was the eldest of eight children, was reared on a farm, and afterward worked his father’s farm on shares. After his marriage, which occurred October 1, 1855, he purchased a farm in Ballard County, Ky., on which he resided for sixteen years. His wife, formerly Miss Louisa E. Quishenberry, is a native of this county. In 1871 Mr. Miles removed to his present farm of 140 acres in this county, on which he erected a pleasant residence, and made many substantial improvements. His success in life has been due to his own efforts, which, though interfered with by service in the army, and by many other embarrassments, have been sufficient to gain him a home and comfortable surroundings in life. During his war service he was a member of Company E, Seventh Kentucky Cavalry (Confederate), in which he enlisted in 1863. In September of that year he was taken prisoner at Swallow Bluff, on the Tennessee River, and was held at Fort Delaware for eighteen months, when he was paroled and returned home. Mr. and Mrs. Miles are parents of seven children: Jennie T. (wife of L. B. Holt), Henry L., Samuel L., Albert F., Mary E., Ettie and Ava.
