My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

GEORGE W. ROBERTSON is a son of George W., Sr., and Martha Robertson. His father was a native of the State of Kentucky. His mother, though reared in Kentucky, was a native of North Carolina. These parents were among the pioneer settlers of Livingston County, Ky., where George W. Robertson, Jr., was born in 1836. He was reared on his father’s farm until he attained the age of sixteen, when he began his mercantile life, first as a salesman in Smithland. Having a desire to visit the Western frontier, he went to California in 1853, where he spent two years. On his return he located in New Orleans, where he learned the art of photographing, which engaged his attention until 1876, the last eleven years of which time he operated in Paducah. In 1877, having abandoned the art, he formed a business connection with T. J. Atkins in the grocery trade. In 1882 he purchased the interest of Mr. Atkins, and is now devoting himself strictly to mercantile business. Mr. Robertson was married in Livingston County, Ky., in 1859, to Miss Anna M. Stonebreaker, and has a family of six children, viz.: Jefferson B., George H., Charles, Ida, Lulu and Mittie Robertson. The family residence is on Broadway, and the business house at No. 22 Market Street. Mr. Robertson is a member of the I. O. O. F. and K. of H.
