My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

EDWARD P. GILSON, son of Lewis and Ann E. (Peck) Gilson, was born in 1844, in Danville, Vt., and was ten years old when his parents emigrated to Kentucky. He returned however, to his native State, where he obtained a good English education. He began his business life in 1868, as a member of the firm of W. R. Leigh & Co., of Paducah, Ky., and has been a resident of that city ever since, with the exception of three years, which he spent in the tobacco market, in New York City, having previously engaged in the manufacture of cigars and plug tobacco, in Paducah. Mr. Gilson is a man of good business qualifications, and is held in high esteem by a large circle of friends; for some years, he occupied the position of teller in the American German National Bank, of Paducah. Since 1879, he has been operating a paint store, located at No. 303 Broadway. He is an honored member of the Masonic fraternity. He was married in St. Louis, Mo., in 1882, to Miss Maggie A., daughter of Rev. F. Lack, of that city, and has one child, Jennie L. Gilson.
