My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

REUBEN J. HILL, farmer and tobacco speculator of Oakland Precinct, in Marshall County, is a native of the county born in 1833, on the farm where he now lives. His parents, Burrell and Sallie Hill were among the early pioneer settlers of Marshall County. The former was born in South Carolina in 1793, but immigrated to Kentucky about 1819, settling at that time in Hopkins County, where he married Sallie Prewett. They soon after came to Marshall County, locating a short distance north of Benton, on Clark’s River. They remained, however, but a short while, removing thence to the old Hill homestead, where Reuben now lives. There they spent the remainder of their days. Sallie, who was born in 1789, in Georgia, died in 1872, and Burrell in 1874. They had a family of five children as follows: Williams P., Benjamin H., Elizabeth, deceased wife of J. L. Fooks; Amelia L., wife of Daniel Fooks; and Reuben J. Hill, whose name heads this sketch. He was married in 1858, to Miss Maria Johnston, eldest daughter of J. H. Johnston, Esq. They have been blessed with eight children, as follows: Alice E., wife of W. E. Little; Wade H., who married Miss Mary N. Franklin; Lola M., wife of John D. Lindsay; Maud, Mary E., Henry B., Lillian M. and Frank Boone Hill.
