Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

WILLIAM H. MOSS was born in Greensburg, Ky., February 8, 1825, there grew to manhood, and in 1856, came to Hickman County, where he still resides. His father, Capt. Thomas S. T. Moss, a native of Virginia, was born in 1790, removed with his parents in childhood to Mercer County, Ky., served twice as captain in the war of 1812, and died about 1850. He married Judith C. Bullock, of Perryville; she was born in 1800, and died in 1866. Their children are George B., Louisa (Hutchinson), Col. James W. (killed in battle), subject, John A., Mary (Montgomery), Susan H. (Poe), Lieut. Luther C., Harriet (Thompson), Katie (Overal and Van Meter), Thomas E. and Josephine L. The family have largely participated in the wars of the country; three brothers having served in the Mexican war, and four in the late war, our subject having taken an active part in both. On May 29, 1851, Mr. Moss married Miss Sarah J., daughter of Rev. Joseph and Patsey (Moss) Price, of Green County, Ky., (born in 1827, and died in 1882), and to them have been born John L., Joseph P., Thomas S. T. (deceased), William J. (deceased), George T., Wesley E. (deceased), Robert E. and Pelham A. Subject was next married March 14, 1883, to Miss Rachel A., daughter of Kirby and Rachel (Wyatt) Jones, of McCracken County, Ky. Mr. Moss is a farmer, owning 200 acres of good and productive land. He is a Royal Arch Mason; a Methodist in religion, and an old line Whig in politics, now affiliating with the Democratic party.
