My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

WAKEFIELD M. SAMUELS was born February 17, 1821, in Nelson County, Ky. He is a son of John and Rachael (Kirtz) Samuels. The father was born in 1796 in the same county and State; he died in 1852. The mother was born in Maryland; she died in 1866, aged seventy-two. Our subject was reared on his father’s farm. In 1838 he went to Adair County, and there worked at the saddlery trade. The following year he returned to Bradstown, Nelson County. In 1841 he removed to Cumberland County, and there remained until 1852, when he came to Hickman County, where he has since lived. He was here engaged in merchandising and the hotel business about five years, after which he removed to his present farm, which joins Clinton on the west. This farm consists of 130 acres, largely devoted to the nursery business—only nursery in the county, and no finer can be found in the State. His principal productions are the apple, peach, pear, plum, quince, cherry, grape and strawberry. He employs from ten to thirty hands, and his strawberries are shipped principally to Chicago. His trees are sold principally in Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Missouri and Illinois. Mr. Samuels was sheriff of this county from 1863 to 1867; he has also been police judge. He was married November 12, 1844, to Sarah L. Stoner, of Cumberland County. These parents had eight children, five living—three daughters and two sons. Mr. Samuels is a member of the Christian Church.
