Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

THOMAS J. NALL, Hickman County, was born June 9, 1808, in Washington County, Ky. He is a son of Martin and Elizabeth (Elliston) Nall. The father was born in Virginia, came to Washington County, Ky., at an early day, and in 1832 the family came to Hickman County. He died in 1852, aged seventy-two. The mother was born in Washington County, and died in 1818. Our subject was reared on his father’s farm, and at the age of twenty-one commenced farming for himself, which he has since continued. He has owned 220 acres of land, a part of which he has deeded to his children. He was married in 1832 to Sarah Jenkins, of Washington County; she died in 1834, aged twenty. In 1835 he married Sarah Spicer, of Georgia; these parents have seven children, four sons and three daughters: John A, enlisted in 1861 in Company E, Twelfth Tennessee Infantry, and served to the end of the war; William J. enlisted in 1861 in Company E, Twelfth Tennessee, in 1862 were both transferred to the Third Kentucky Infantry, and served to the close of the war; Maria E., now wife of William Pharis; Sarah F., now Mrs. Leroy Eggbert; Martha A., wife of George W. Parrott; Thomas M. and James H. William J. was married June 15, 1865, to Susan C. Byrd, of Hickman County; they have three sons and two daughters. John A. was married in 1868, to Lydia J. Gwyn, of Hickman County; she died in the spring of 1884, leaving four sons. The family are members of the Baptist Church.
