Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

S. B. MAY, Hickman County, was born March 18, 1822, in Spencer County, Ky. He is a son of Stephen and Elizabeth (Berkley) May. The father was born in the same county and State; he carried on farming and trading, served in the war of 1812, holding a commission of second lieutenant, and died on his farm in 1859, aged sixty-six. The mother was born in Loudoun County, Va.; she died in 1860, aged sixty-three. Our subject was reared on his father’s farm and after the death of his father, became owner of 367 acres of property, which originally comprised 613 acres; here he continued to reside until 1872. In 1880 he came to his present farm, which consists of 276 acres and is known as the Ringo farm. Mr. May was married in 1859 to Miss Sarah F. Yantis, of Garrard County, Ky.; this union has been blessed with five daughters. Mr. and Mrs. May are members of the Presbyterian Church. Mr. May is also a member of the Masonic fraternity.
