Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

MATTHEW REILLY was born in West Virginia, November 17, 1824, came with his parents in 1831 to Hickman County, Ky., and in 1839 moved to Scott County, Mo.; then in 1847 to Lee County, Iowa, returning in 1860 to Hickman County, Ky., where he has since resided. His father, Edward Reilly, died in 1833, aged about sixty five years. He was the son of Peter Reilly, an Irishman, who lost his life in the American Revolution. Edward married Ann Root, and their offspring are Mary A. (Baran), Eliza (Baker), Peter, James M., Caroline, Lilburn H., Helen M. (Conder), Zerilda (Madigan and Henley), subject and Andrewville. Matthew Reilly was married in 1846, to Miss Emily E., daughter of Alfred E. Harris, of Scott County, Mo. (died in 1854), and to them were born Ann E. (Cromwell), William (deceased), Andrewville (deceased) and Napoleon B. He was next married in 1858, to Mrs. Sarah Rodman (born in 1827), daughter of Thomas and Mary (Scott) Bryars, and their children are Oscar (deceased), Lilburn H., Josephine (Baker), Edward T., Martha, Sidney and Calvin B. Mr. Reilly is a farmer, having 225 acres of productive land. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, a Christian and a Democrat.
