Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

JOHN R. KEMP was born May 18, 1844 in Cumberland County, Ky. He is a son of W. T. and S. H. (Emerson) Kemp. The father was born in Abingdon, Va., and is now living in Clinton. The mother died in 1852, aged thirty years. John R. enlisted, in 1861, in Company L, of the Third Kentucky Infantry, Confederate States Army; and served until the battle of Franklin, where he was wounded and taken prisoner; he was confined until the close of the war, and then released on parole. He afterward returned to Clinton, where he was appointed deputy circuit clerk. This position he held until 1869, when he went to Louisiana, where he engaged in farming and merchandising, remaining there until 1878, when he returned to Clinton. In the fall of 1880 he was elected to the office of circuit clerk, in which capacity he is still serving. He was married in December, 1870, to Julia Raiford, of Marshall County, Miss. Three children, one son and two daughters, have blessed this union. Mr. Kemp is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and the Methodist Episcopal Church South.
