My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

J. K. SELLARS, Hickman County, was born in Maury County, Tenn., February 11, 1811, and is a son of John and Eleanor (Kenny) Sellars, natives of North Carolina, the father of English descent, the mother of Irish. In 1833 the father came to Hickman County, and settled on the farm now owned by subject. He was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and died here in 1847. The mother died in September, 1835, being at the time of her death a faithful member of the Baptist Church. Subject was the third of nine children, of whom but two are now living: Mrs. Jane Evans, in Graves County, and John K., our subject. In 1840 John K. assumed control of the home farm, where he has since resided. He now owns about 120 acres, with about seventy acres in cultivation. He was married October 27, 1842, to Miss Bethina Weatherspoon, a daughter of William and Mary (Keorcum) Weatherspoon. Three living children have blessed this union. Mr. and Mrs. Sellars are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South.
