My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

JOHN D. ROBERTS was born in Shreveport, La., February 23, 1845, and is the only child of John and Sabina (Dunlap) Roberts — the former of whom was a native of Tennessee, and the latter of Indiana. They were of Scotch and English descent respectively. Our subject however, has six half-brothers, the fruit of a subsequent marriage of both his father and mother. John Roberts received his early education in his native State of Tennessee, where he also learned the saddler and harness-maker’s trade. When a young man he removed to Shreveport, La., where he followed his trade with abundant success until his death, which occurred in May, 1845, when our subject was only three months old. He was a member of the Baptist and Mrs. Roberts of the Presbyterian Church. Our subject received a good common school education, and an academic one at Warsaw, Ind., in early life. At the age of eighteen years he went to Cairo, Ill., and here he served seven years as an apprentice and clerk in the drug business. He then came to Columbus, Ky., where he clerked in a drug store for some four years, after which he opened a drug store of his own at the same place, and has been engaged in that business ever since. He is one of the oldest and best posted druggists and chemists in the Purchase. Mr. Roberts is yet unmarried, he and three of his half-brothers living together. He is liberal in his political views and is one of the leading and promising citizens of the city and county.
