Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

JOE E. PORTER was born April 29, 1852, in Hickman County, Ky. He is the son of E. H. and Priscilla (Porter) Porter. The father was born near Eminence, Ky., and came to Hickman County about 1840, where he has since resided and engaged in farming. Our subject was reared on his father’s farm. In 1873 he went to Milburn, Ky., where he was engaged in merchandising seven years, after which he went to Paducah and secured a position as traveling salesman for George Rock & Co., and remained with them four years. He then went to St. Louis and traveled for Claflin, Allen & Co. one year, when, on account of sickness, he resigned. In September, 1883, he came to Clinton, where he has since lived. He was married in 1875 to Nannie S. Gregory, of Mayfield, Ky. These parents have three sons. J. M. Porter, the brother of Joe E. Porter, was born in August, 1857, in Hickman County. He engaged in merchandising in Arlington in 1875. In 1878 he went to Paducah, and was traveling salesman for W. N. Robinson three years. He then went to St. Louis and secured a position with the St. Louis Glass & Queensware Company, and has since represented this firm. Mr. Porter is regarded as one of the most successful salesman on the road. In November, 1883, the firm of Porter, Myatt & Co. was established.
