My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

DR. J. R. SCARBOROUGH was born in Stewart County, Tenn., April 12, 1846, and is a son of W. W. and M. L. (Wofford) Scarborough. The father was a native of North Carolina, and moved to Tennessee in a very early day. In 1852 he came to the Purchase, and settled in Ballard County, near Milburn. There he farmed until his death in 1856; his widow died in 1876. Subject was the tenth of twelve children, of whom seven are now living: Sarah A. (wife of J. H. Ashbrook, in Ballard County), W. H. (in Milburn), Celia A. (in Ballard County), S. L. (in Spring Hill), J. T. (in Graves County), M. E. (wife of George Purtle), and J. R. (our subject). The early life of the last named was spent on a farm. He received his literary education in Ballard County. In 1870 he turned his attention to the carpenter’s trade; this he followed until 1876, when he began reading medicine at the office of Drs. Hocker & Hobbs in Graves County. He subsequently attended lectures at the Vanderbilt University at Nashville, Tenn., and graduated from that institution in the class of 1878. He first settled in Danville, Tenn., where he followed his profession one year. He then came to this district and is now the only physician in the place. At present he is a member of the Western Kentucky Medical Society. Dr. Scarborough was married December 14, 1882, to Miss Molly F. Lamkin, a daughter of Shelton and Louisa (Atwood) Lamkin, natives of Kentucky. The result of this union has been one child, since deceased. Dr. S. has been identified with the I. O. O. F. fraternity.
