Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

FELIX E. JEWELL, Hickman County, was born in Daviess County, Ky., May 6, 1838, and is a son of Louis and Mary N. (Potts) Jewell. The father was born in Fayette County, Ky., in 1802, and his grandfather, David Jewell, was born in Loudoun County, Va. The latter was a soldier in an early day and participated in St. Clair’s defeat. He came to the State in 1795, and settled in Fayette County. He came to Daviess County, in 1837, where he died December 17, 1848. In 1851, the father of our subject came to Hickman County, and settled on the farm now owned by the latter. Prior to his coming to this county he had been a miller, but after his arrival here he confined his attention to farming. He died January 3, 1873, a member of the Masonic fraternity. His wife died October 7, 1872. Felix E. Jewell was the fourth of six children, and is the only one of them now living. He has always resided on the home farm, and now owns 135 acres, of which fifty-five acres are in cultivation. Mr. Jewell was married in Franklin County, Ky., February 7, 1866, to Miss Mary A Utley, a daughter of Allen R., and Harriet (Alexander) Utley. Her father was a native of Jessamine County; her mother of Trimble. Mrs. Jewell was born in Woodford County, April 1, 1844, and is the mother of two living children; Richard A., and Mary L. Mr. Jewell enlisted in Company A, of the Thirty-ninth Kentucky Mounted Infantry, United States Army, December 15, 1863, and was discharged April 18, 1865. Mrs. Jewell is a member of the Baptist Church, and Mr. Jewell of Milburn Lodge, K. of H.
