My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

F. M. RAY was born July 5, 1822, in Washington County, Ky., and is a son of Dennis and Nancy (Hays) Ray. The father was born in the same county and State, in 1798, and died here in 1874. He was one of the earliest settlers of Hickman County, having come here in 1827. He served at one of the magistrates of the county for many years prior to his death. F. M. Ray was reared on his father’s farm where he remained until the age of twenty-one. He then attended college and taught school five years. During a portion of this time he also read law. He then taught the Clinton Seminary for eight years, meanwhile pursuing his law studies. Discontinuing teaching, he turned his attention to the practice of law, and has since followed that profession. He represented this county in the legislature in the session of 1854-55. He spends his winters in Florida, where he owns an orange grove near Fort Dade, Fernando County. He was married November 4, 1847, to Miss Martha Hart, of west Tennessee, and this union has been blessed with ten children, five of whom— two sons and three daughters —are now living. Mr. and Mrs. Ray have been life-long members of the Missionary Baptist Church.
