Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

CHARLES E. MEDLEY was born October 17, 1845, in Halifax County, Va. He is a son of Isaac and Caroline A. (Edwards) Medley, who was also born in the same State and county. In 1852 the family moved to Christian County, Ky.; there the father died May 27, 1879, aged seventy-four. The mother was born January 14, 1819; she died May 29, 1870. Our subject was reared on his father’s farm until 1869 when he went to New Orleans, was there employed by a commission firm two years, after which he returned to Christian County. In 1871 he went to Texas, also extended his travels through the western territories, and returned to Christian County in 1873; there he raised one crop and 1874 came to Hickman County and settled on his farm, which now consists of 450 acres, four miles south of Columbus. He engaged in farming until 1882, when he moved to Columbus and has since been in the employ of the St. Louis and Iron Mountain Railroad.
